Schroth Method at Fifty 'n Fit

The Schroth method impacts scoliosis through individualized exercise, breath, awareness and education. Our goal is to help adolescents and adults live optimally with scoliosis and other spine deformities such as Sheuermann's disease. We are happy to be a resource for motivation and education and we will work with your medical professional team to get the best results.

In scoliosis, abnormal spine curvatures combine with the downward force of gravity to lead to a vicious cycle of asymmetrical loading of the spine that can drive the progression of the curve. The Schroth method interrupts this vicious cycle. Schroth trained physical therapists use curve-specific exercises combined with breath, repetitively practiced in multiple positions to challenge the body's strengths and weaknesses and create a new posture.

This new posture awareness is applied to daily life. When exercises and self-correction of the scoliotic posture are practiced consistently, spinal forces are changed and the body can achieve a more optimal position. In some cases reduction of the scoliosis curve is possible.

Potential goals and benefits of Schroth therapy:

  • Pain relief
  • Improved understanding and acceptance of scoliosis
  • Prevention of curve progression
  • Posture improvement
  • Improved respiratory function
  • Improved strength, endurance and tolerance for activities
  • Enhanced aesthetic appearance
  • Prevention or delay of surgery
  • Improved bracing compliance and results

To get started: Obtain a referral from your doctor for scoliosis treatment. Bring in your X-rays prior to your evaluation. The first visit will consist of a review of your medical history, evaluation of your spinal curve, musculoskeletal function, respiratory function, and digital photos to document your posture prior to treatment. We will discuss goals and begin education on skeletal anatomy and function. If you are not sure if you are a candidate for the Schroth method come in for an evaluation and we can discuss your individual case.

Schroth therapy is performed at Fifty 'n Fit by Lisa Page, PT. She has practiced physical therapy with an emphasis on spine care since 1995 and received her Schroth method certification in 2014. She enjoys working with adolescents and adults with scoliosis and other spine dysfunctions and sharing in their successes and triumphs as they gain understanding and empowerment over their diagnosis.
